The 2005 Illawarra Combined Association Tennis Championships - 12/12/05
were held at Beaton Park on the weekend, with 155 entries across the Open, B & C grade events providing an enjoyable weekend for both the serious and not-so serious competitiors. This event brings together tennis players from the 3 Illawarra tennis associations, Tennis Wollongong, Bulli & District Tennis Association, and Kiama/Shellharbour Tennis Association. A tight schedule of singles, doubles and mixed doubles was packed into 2 days and there were some tired players at the end of it. In the open mens singles, Matthew Mazur of Gwyneville defended the title he won last year overcoming local tennis stalwart Owen Rice in the final 6-3, 6-2, but this was not before struggling against Bill Goddard in a tough semi-final that went to a third set tie-breaker. In the Ladies Open Singles, teenager Elle Carney of Figtree has returned from playing overseas to breeze through her earlier matches before winning a hard hitting final against young tennis prodigy Jennifer Nguyen of Gwyneville 6-2, 6-1.
